Continue along the Peak Forest Canal towards Hyde. Progress is impeded slightly by a tree which had fallen into the canal the other side of the Hyde Bank Tunnel, but we managed to get past after a few attempts, and got to Hyde in time for our appointment with the man delivering wood pellets for the stove. Aaron joined us a little later, and we continued on to Portland Basin for a pump-out and to take on diesel.

The short section of the Ashton Canal before it leads into the Huddersfield Canal in Ashton-under-Lyne is as grim as I remembered it from last year. The water is disgusting and choked with rubbish, and then there is the infamous Asda Tunnel, and Ashton Lock (Lock no. 1W on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal) surrounded by massive barbedwire fences. Fortunately it gets better from here onwards. After a short stop in Stalybridge to do some shopping at the conveniently sited canalside Tesco we eventually find a suitble mooring about a mile out of the town.
