Ipswich & Halesworth

East Anglia trip - day 2

Reasonable breakfast at the Ramada Encore hotel. For once there are good scrambled eggs on a hot buffet. Staff are friendly and efficient too - and they are all English.

Felaw Maltings, Ipswich

Weather bright, sunny and warm again. Took a walk along the river and down the other side from the docks to take a look at the impressive Felaw Maltings. Then back and up through the town centre to the Wolsey sculpture (on the corner of the quaintly named Silent Street). Then around the Buttermarket and along to the impressive Corn Exchange. Back to the hotel in good time to collect my bag and walk to the station to get the train to Halesworth.

The train was delayed a bit because of a late running connecting service from London at Ipswich, and an "operational incident" at a level crossing by Woodbridge Station, which necessitated an emergency stop. So, a fairly leisurely progress through the picturesque Suffolk countryside.

The Angel, Halesworth

Walked from Halesworth station to The Angel hotel on Halesworth's Thoroughfare. It is a rather nice 16th century coaching inn with two bars, a restaurant and seven bedrooms. Like the White Hart in St Austell they seem to have done a good job of combining all three functions. Very friendly and helpful staff, the room a good standard, and comfortable and relaxing bar. A very nice place to stay indeed!

Halesworth Milennium Green

As it was such nice weather I decided to go straight out for a walk. Started by doing the Town Trail and then continued on through the Town Park to the rather splendid Halesworth Millennium Green. This is actually a large public area made up of a series of meadows alongside the rivers and waterways below the town.

Walked back to the hotel and had a pint of Adnams sitting outside in the afternoon sunshine. Stayed for a rather good pizza (£9.00, but it was their top "speciale").

Strolled down to the White Hart further down on the Thoroughfare for another pint of Adnams before returning to the hotel.
