Sixteen Minutes West

Tried a new restaurant in Greenwich tonight - 16" West is the National Maritime Museum's new brasserie in the recently opened Sammy Ofer Wing, which backs onto Greenwich Park. Dave had wandered past earlier in the evening and got hold of a menu to tempt me when we met-up later for a drink at the Rose & Crown after I had finished work.

It is a slightly odd place, tucked away around the back of the Museum. Access is via a side gate near to the King William Gate into Greenwich Park. After dusk, when the Park is closed, there is not much reason to be around here, so there is never going to be any passing trade in the evenings at this time of year. However, there were several groups of diners when we arrived at arround 8:00pm.

There was a very pleasant, relaxed atmosphere, the service was good, and very friendly, and the food was excellent:

- Potted Severn & Wye “Hot smoked” salmon with Irish soda bread
- Charcuterie plate (chorizo, pork loin, salsichon, serrano ham, gherkins)

- Confit duck leg, parsnip mash and savoy cabbage
- "Flat Iron" steak, pumpkin puree and pesto with sautee potatoes

- Date pudding
- Lincolnshire poacher cheese (unfortunately, the berry parfait, which I had my eye on, was not available by the time we ordered deserts)

- Bottle of Thesaurum Corvina (Italian Cabernet Sauvignon)

Less than £100 in all.

Overall, a very enjoyable meal, though I suspect that the experience would be significantly enhanced as a lunch venue, or during Summer evenings when the view over Greenwich Park can be appreciated.
