Leeds to Scarborough

Yorkshire trip - day 10
Sunday 6 May

Very cold overnight, but a lovely bright sunny morning. Leave Dave & Niall at the mooring at Rodley to get the bus into Leeds.

Bus: 9:00 Bus 760 from Rodley to Leeds (Centenary Square) 9:18; £2.40 single.

Wandered around the city centre in the sunshine. Centenary Square, Millennium Square (owls), City Square.

Train: depart Leeds 11:18, arrive Scarborough 12:34;
TransPennine Express; £7.00 standard advance single.

Walk to Derwent House Hotel. Nice little first floor single room with a small double bed and a great view over the North Bay.

Had a good walk around the town. Down through Clarence Gardens to North Sands, and along Royal Albert Drive and Marine Drive around the castle headland. Along all three harbour piers, and along the South Sands Foreshore. Up through the gardens, past the Grand Hotel to the Spa footbridge. Back into the town centre and down Westborough, Newborough and Eastborough to the harbour.

Leeds Hotel pub: Wold Top Brewery - Headland Red.

Interesting local pub, with some colourful locals, including fishermen straight off the trawler (at least that's what it smelt like). I thought that it was the one Scarborough pub mentioned in the Good Pub Guide, but that is the Leeds Arms (see below), which is a just two doors up on the same street.

Dinner: Ask, Italian restaurant in a nice modern building right on the harbourside by the fish quay - spicy meat calzone with a glass of Montepulciano. £15.50.

The Golden Ball: Samuel Smith's - Old Brewery Bitter.

Cosy, nice harbourside location, and very cheap beer (Sam Smith's), but mostly older clientele.

Leeds Arms: Timothy Taylor's - Landlord.

Very cosy, warm and very friendly.
