Topsham

Spending a long weekend in the charming town of Topsham in East Devon for my brother's wedding.

Ferry Road, Topsham

Topsham is a small town on the north side of the Exe estuary about five miles south east of Exeter. In addition to its attractive location and ecclectic architecture, Topsham also enjoys an almost unseemly number of excellent pubs and restaurants (for a town of its size - pop. 5,000). I found it a pretty relaxing place, and spent a couple of glorious mornings just strolling along the waterfront looking at all the funky buildings, the river, and the waterfowl (including sandpipers and egrets), and on our last day Dave & I had not a little fun feeding the ducks by the quayside at Ferry Road.



Route 2 Cafe and Steam Packet Apartments

We are staying at the Steam Packet Apartments, in one of three fully-equiped self-catering apartments situated above the Route 2 cafe by Topsham Quay. Our room - the "Estuary Room" was pleasantly light and airy, with a large sitting room and kitchen/diner overlooking the quayside and estuary. At £100 a night it was only very slightly more expensive than a standard room at the Globe Hotel - Topsham's only real hotel (who also manage the Steam Packet Apartmets). The apartment is attractively decorated and nicely furnished, and my only complaint would be that the double bed was a bit short for me. The staff in the cafe were very friendly, as were those at the Globe (where you have to go to settle-up after checking-out).
